The long truth about Elis vingar (Elis´wings)

Elis´s wings is truly a name for a special blend of Swedish snus by Krook. Elis was a farmer in Säby on Visingsö and one of the island´s first wind turbines was built on his land, locally known as Elis´ wings. I´ve known this for more than 30 years.
Good name, wind turbine with three wings- three varieties of snus; Tobacco wings, Sweet wings and Hot wings. Done!
One day, as I was talking to Stefan, one of Elis´s sons I told him about my snus. Great, he said, Elis wings is our old hockeyteam. The team was called the Juniors to start with. After a while of winning games, catching the boat to the mainland and challenging teams there they became quite good.
Their confidence probably grew and they needed a new, cooler name. The Juniors wasn´t good enough. As they stod on Elis farm in Säby and discussed it next to Elis´old car, an OPEL kadett, one of them looked at the black wing sticking out over the rear window. ´That´s it´, he said. ´Our name will be Elis´ wings – that´s a cool name´.
So that was it.
Elis´wings was a hockeyteam!

The philosophy behind the tobaccoplants that became snus.

Our snus is a blend of different tobaccoes choosen from experience. Some plants are left as seed plants, and subsequently we can have our own fröbank – ´bank of seeds´ and continue growing the best plants year after year. At harvest time we decide on curing and storing methods. Factors that are important to the final result. The philosophy in the production is to use traditional methods and a modern touch that can work together for a sustainable craftsmanship.

Categories according to Krook.

The selection of different parts of the tobaccoplant and size of the cut or ground tobacco, indeed gives a personal touch to the final Swedish snus.
Finely ground tobacco leaves and plant parts, five categories;
Croptwig, is flour from the ridge (central midrib) of the leaves.
All Lamina, this is exclusively flour from leaf mass.
Lamina, consists of ¾ All Lamina and ¼ Croptwig.
Leaf flour, is tobacco flour from leaf mass and leaves veins.
Crown, is flour of the flower crown such as smaller twigs, seeds, seed capsules, flowers and the small top leaves.

The refined Elis´wings base blend of snus

I refine the base blend into three different sorts of snus.

Tobacco wings, medium to fine consistence, which has an aroma of the stored tobacco.

Sweet wings, medium to fine consistence, which is a blend with locally produced honey and a hint of natural licorice.

Hot wings, heavy rough consistence, which is a blend with locally grown orange Portokolova chili and a touch of citrus herbs.
